There could be a big upside in the generics battle... Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (RDY) is a emerging drug company based in Hydrabad, India. It has a pharmaceutical ingredients business and a finished drugs business. The Company was founded in 1984 and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 2001. It has become a somewhat infamous competitor in the generics world using a strategy of aggressively going after vulnerable patents on blockbuster drugs. A strategy that is not without risk. Dr. Reddy’s has been named in patent infringement suits by Pfizer (PFE), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Aventis (AVE), Sanofi-Synthelabo (SNY), Eli Lilly (LLY), Bayer (BAY), UCB (UCBJF.PK), and others. With all these well capitalized companies on its heels, Dr. Reddy’s recently decided to pursue a slightly less aggressive strategy, and it is also looking to enter the generic market in the U.S. without legal challenges.
