BOULDER JUNCTION, Wis., Aug. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Heart Association (AHA) has changed the method rescuers will use to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and deploy automated external defibrillators (AEDs). Changes made to the rules of CPR by the American Heart Association will profoundly affect the way CPR is performed. This rule change is called “Guidelines 2005" by the AHA.
More importantly, hundreds of thousands of portable AEDs, such as those manufactured by Cardiac Science, Defibtech, HeartSine, Medtronic Physio- Control, Philips, Welch Allyn and ZOLL, will require updating or reprogramming to conform to these new guidelines. In some cases, older AED models cannot be reprogrammed to comply with the new AHA Guidelines. AEDs have easy-to-follow audible prompts which guide rescuers during the emergency. Devices which do not conform to the new guidelines may confuse rescuers who have been trained under the new CPR protocols.
To help AED owners and users learn more about the new guidelines and to facilitate the upgrade process, the AED Superstore(R) has sponsored a new website which can be found at http://www.AEDUpgrades.com . This website is frequently updated with the most current information available.
“The new AHA guidelines significantly change the way people will use their AEDs and the way CPR is performed in the field,” said Jonathan Dobbs, Customer Relations Manager of the AED Superstore(R). “Among the dozens of different models of AEDs in service worldwide, finding accurate upgrade information can be overwhelming. The AED Superstore(R) is committed to helping AED owners navigate the upgrade process quickly and easily.”
An AED is an essential tool used during a cardiac arrest emergency. AEDUpgrades.com is designed to educate AED users about the changes in CPR delivery and to provide information to help them make the most of their devices. Consumers researching the purchase of a new AED can learn if specific models already comply with the new AHA guidelines or find information about future availability.
AEDUpgrades.com will show defibrillator owners which models of AEDs and AED training units may be upgraded to comply with the new guidelines. In addition, visitors will find a wealth of current information on availability, pricing, and instructions for upgrading their devices.
According to Dobbs, AED upgrades should be timed to coincide with updated guidelines training from their local CPR instructor. The device upgrade and rescuer reeducation processes are expected to take up to two years. AED owners should consult their medical director before performing any device revisions.
