AbbVie's pursuit of Shire will take a new turn next week when the company sends its chief researcher to the UK.

The Chicago-based company, which has already been rebuffed by Shire three times, hopes to win more support from Shire investors by trumpeting its research might.

Jim Sullivan, AbbVie's head of discovery, will be eager to dispel the belief that AbbVie is over-reliant on its blockbuster rheumatoid arthritis drug Humira, which brought in more than half the company's $18.8bn (£11bn) revenue last year but will lose patent protection by 2017.
