Overview

The field of medical device sales is competitive. Potential employers are interested in hiring sales people who have proven themselves in the field. They want to see the bottom line: What are your past sales numbers and how skilled are you at obtaining and keeping a client base? Pharmaceutical and medical companies receive a constant flow of resumes for medical device sales positions. To get noticed and hired, your resume needs to stand out. It should be concise and to the point. Focus on skills and accomplishments to get your resume to the top of the pile.

Step 1
Head the top of your resume with your name and contact information only. Do not clutter the top of your resume with extra information. Employers of medical sales professionals look over a lot of resumes. Including only necessary information at the top of your resume makes it easy for hiring staff to find essential information.

Step 2
Start your resume with a brief one or two sentence “summary” that describes your experience and accomplishments. Think of the summary as the sales pitch to entice prospective employers to continue reading your resume. Example: “With 10 years of experience in medical device sales, I have developed excellent communication and account management skills. I have been the top sales associate in my district for the last three years”.

Step 3
Follow the summary with an easy to read bullet list that highlights your strengths and skills. The “Strengths and Skills” bullet list gives potential employers a quick look at your sales and account management skills. Highlight communication skills, leadership skills, and the ability to close a sale.

Step 4
List your career experience in chronological order, starting with your most recent job. Include the name of the company, your position at the company, dates of employment and your job description.

Step 5
End your resume with a bullet list of “Accomplishments.” Potential employers are most interested in how much you can sell. Global Edge Recruiting, a nationwide recruiting agency for medical device sales jobs, suggests listing your “past quota attainment, percentage of market share” and “percentage of plan attainment”.

Tip
If you do not have experience in medical device sales, highlight other sales or medical experience in your resume.

Warning
Thoroughly proofread your resume for spelling and grammar. A well written resume serves as a representation of communication skills in a professional manner.
