The US journal Science said all co-authors of an article in which discredited South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-Suk claimed a major stem cell breakthrough had agreed on a retraction. Editors said, however, that the text would be held to ensure it squared with a probe by Seoul National University (SNU) into the episode, which sparked a worldwide furore.Hwang’s fall from grace culminated last week when South Korean investigators said there was no evidence to back his claim to have tailored stem cells to individual patients -- which would have represented a step forward in the fight against diseases such as Alzheimer’s and diabetes.
