There is no difference in effectiveness between a drugstore decongestant and a prescription drug that is much pricier. That’s the conclusion of researchers at the University of Chicago, who reported Monday that a popular drugstore medication -- pseudophedrine -- taken in daily doses of 240 mg, works just as well in relieving the symptoms of hay fever as 10 mg daily of montelukast, which costs about four time as much as the over-the-counter drug, and a higher risk of side effects.
