We like to think of ourselves as warriors engaged in epic battles with dark forces. To free the world of evil and hail the return of the King, as the Lord of the Rings would have it. No surprise these movies are box office successes. They underscore what we all sense: that gaining understanding and solving problems is one thing, but fighting and winning a war is for real.
