Two prominent items of nutrition news this week seem to me wolves in sheep’s clothing. Superficially, both make innocuous and welcome entries. Just beneath the surface, however, danger lurks.
The first of the two was a commentary in the New York Times arguing for a trial of diet before bariatric surgery. The superficial appeal of this to someone like me, devoted to lifestyle as medicine, is likely self-evident. I prefer applications of skillpower by oneself over applications of cold, hard steel by one’s surgeon every time we can make them work. Skillpower is self-perpetuating, durable and shareable. No one ever shares the lessons they learn while under general anesthesia.
