SF Board Of Sups President, Aaron Peskin, To Announce Next Steps In CPMC Strike

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Aaron Peskin, President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors will speak before a capacity crowd of striking Sutter CPMC caregivers, labor supporters, activists, elected officials, and community leaders -- in what is now the sixteenth day of a strike against Sutter CPMC. Supervisor Peskin, who supported striking CPMC caregivers in the past, will be announcing next steps to resolve the labor dispute and ensure Sutter/CPMC provides the highest quality patient care possible.

A string of state and local elected leaders have consistently endorsed Sutter/CPMC caregivers on strike, including San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, and Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown. Their continued support is necessary as strikers overcome daily obstacles on the picket line, such as reports of replacement workers’ poor patient care standards and illegal behavior in the hospital. Striking caregivers also remained united after a judge denied Sutter/CPMC a temporary restraining order against all strikers based on workers’ first amendment right to picket and lack of evidence of unlawful behavior.

“The past fifteen days have been full of challenges, but we are more united then ever,” said Tom Reynolds, who has worked for six years as a Patient Care Assistant on a cardiac floor at CPMC. “CPMC continues to say it is business as usual inside the hospital, but we know that is not the case. We look forward to hearing Board President Peskin’s plans to hold CPMC accountable to its patients and the community it serves.”

Hospital workers at the three campuses were forced to strike on September 13 after a Federal Mediator offered a compromise settlement proposal that CPMC accepted, then rejected. The caregivers were forced to strike when CPMC unlawfully reneged on its offer to accept the settlement, which featured guidelines for safe staffing and a caregiver training and education fund.
