Berlin, Germany, June 22, 2015: SCIENION a leading global provider of ultra-low volume precision liquid handling systems, today announced that it is launching a new instrument, named sciTEM, enabling high-throughput and innovative SEM/TEM.
Based on SCIENION’s core competencies and years of experience in ultra-low volume liquid dispensing, assay miniaturization, and microarray manufacturing, the sciTEM was specifically developed to deposit multiple different samples onto a single SEM/TEM support. This results in a tremendous increase in the number of samples that can be analyzed per unit time. Beyond reducing the wear and tear on the microscope’s vacuum components, it truly enables high-throughput TEM. This new usage mode will undoubtedly lead to experiments that could not be realized to date, due to limited access to TEM time, and ensuing high costs.
One of the early applications includes the analysis of nanoparticles. In a nanoparticle industrial production environment, good QC necessitates the analysis of a large number of samples, not only from different batches but also from different time points. Placing multiple samples on a single grid immediately cuts down on the amount of TEM time required. The usage cost saving in itself gives rise to a very high return on investment (ROI).
In addition, it can be used to fill micro-wells to perform in-situ TEM. Liquid Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy (LCTEM) is bringing about a paradigm shift in the analysis of nanomaterials in solution. Dr. Gianneschi’s group was the first to use the sciTEM to load LCTEM cells. “It was an absolute pleasure to work with the sciTEM instrument for LCTEM. The set-up of the instrument was quick and easy and we were able to start collecting excellent imaging results immediately. The sciTEM has already had a significant impact on our LCTEM research and we are looking forward to continued work with the team at SCIENION”, said Dr. Nathan C. Gianneschi (Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, California, USA).
“As the leading provider of microarray-based services for a wide variety of applications, we remain committed to our customers in providing the highest quality of products and services in this market,” said Holger Eickhoff, SCIENION CEO. “With the sciTEM, we enter the Material Science market and intend to establish the same great reputation we have earned in the Life Science and Diagnostics markets.”
