Reston, VA (April 3, 2019) - Reston Hospital Center (RHC) today announced that it has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Spinal Surgery Certification. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.

During a rigorous on-site review at RHC, Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards as well as three spinal-specific requirements: discectomy, laminectomy, and spinal fusion. Clinical practice guidelines and performance measures also were assessed.

“Reston Hospital Center has thoroughly demonstrated a high level of care for patients undergoing spinal surgery,” said Patrick Phelan, Executive Director, Hospital Business Development, The Joint Commission. “We commend the hospital for becoming a leader in spinal surgery care for patients in the community.”

Established in 2002 and awarded for a two-year period, The Joint Commission’s disease-specific care certification evaluates clinical programs across the continuum of care and addresses three core areas: Compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

“As the leader in spinal surgery in the Northern Virginia market, Reston Hospital Center is proud to receive this advanced certification from The Joint Commission,” said John Deardorff, President and CEO of Reston Hospital Center and HCA’s Northern Virginia Market. “It reflects the focus and effort we’ve put into the spinal care program, including providing our surgeons with the technology and resources they need to keep our surgical program on the forefront of innovation.”

The RHC Spine Team is comprised of nationally-recognized spine surgeons who excel in utilizing the latest in surgical advancements for spinal procedures. Home to the area’s busiest spine program, RHC performs more than 1,500 spine surgeries annually with over 600 of these procedures utilizing the advanced robotic technology of the Mazor X™ system.
