STAMFORD, Conn., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Purdue Pharma L.P. and its associated companies are donating $1.3 million worth of medications to AmeriCares to aid victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster. The donated medications include the antibiotic Spectracef(R) (cefditoren pivoxil) Tablets and antiseptic products Betadine(R) Solution and Betadine(R) Surgical Scrub. Additionally, Purdue has established an employee matching gifts program to provide financial support to the countries ravaged by the disaster.
"The devastation caused by the Indian Ocean tsunami and earthquake is horrific," said Michael Friedman, President and CEO of Purdue Pharma L.P. "As a company, we want to do whatever we can to help out and many of our employees have expressed a desire to contribute individually as well."
Almost 13,000 bottles of Spectracef are being shipped to Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Eight hundred one-gallon and 600 8-ounce bottles of Betadine Solution and Betadine Surgical Scrub are being shipped to Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Thailand.
The company will also match -- on a dollar-for-dollar basis -- contributions made by Purdue employees, up to a maximum company contribution of $125,000, to the following relief organizations: AmeriCares, the American Red Cross, the International Rescue Committee, Save The Children, and U.S. Fund for UNICEF.
