ANN ARBOR, Mich., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- MichBio, the association for Michigan's biosciences industry, today announced the names of the winning applicants for its Emerging Biosciences Showcase on Nov. 18, the first day of its statewide Expo. The purpose of the Showcase is to introduce venture capital firms from around the country to biosciences start-ups emerging in Michigan. The event provides selected companies with an opportunity to introduce their technologies to an audience of investors, technology experts, and other entrepreneurs.
The Expo is the largest annual gathering of biosciences professionals in the state and will be held Nov. 18-19 at the Rock Financial ShowPlace in Novi. This is the first time the Emerging Biosciences Showcase has been part of the Expo. The inaugural showcase was held last May in advance of the Michigan Growth Capital Symposium in Ann Arbor. Twelve companies presented at that event.
"We're excited to have the Emerging Biosciences Showcase as part of the Expo, which is a natural home for it," said Stephen Rapundalo, Ph.D., MichBio president and CEO. "We have expanded the format to allow a greater number of companies to introduce their new bioscience technologies and commercialization opportunities to the venture capital and angel investor community."
The program, which runs from 1-5:00 p.m., will begin with a keynote address by Shelley B. Thunen, CFO of TherOx, Inc. in Irvine CA. Thunen has held key management positions in a number of start-up companies, including serving as CFO of IntraLase Corp. Following her comments, the program will continue with nine-minute company presentations. Presenting companies include:
The showcase is followed by the MichBio Expo's Opening Reception, where many of the presenting companies will have tabletop displays in the hall to provide time for one-on-one conversations.
