Torrance, CA (May 8, 2013) - Phenomenex Inc., a global leader in the research and manufacture of advanced technologies for the separation sciences, announced today that the company is collaborating with the Southern California Section of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry (AACC) in the development and presentation of a hands-on workshop on liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). The two-day training, which will count for 16 continuing education units, will teach clinical lab scientists how to develop and validate LC/MS/MS assays for diagnostic use. A ratio of one instrument for every four users will ensure hands-on learning. LC/MS/MS is gaining rapid acceptance in the clinical lab due to its specificity and the amount of information it delivers, but the technique requires special training and skills.

The workshop, “Hands-On Development and Validation of LC/MS/MS Assays for Clinical Diagnostics,” was originally conceived by Dr. Paul Fu Sr. of the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, longstanding education chair of the AACC’s Southern California Section. “LC/MS/MS is a valuable tool in the clinical and healthcare settings,” commented Fu. “Phenomenex is the ideal partner to help us provide hands-on training in this technique because of their expertise in HPLC and their close relationship with AB SCIEX, a leading provider of mass spectrometry.”

Workshop instructors will be Seyed Sadjadi, clinical LC/MS/MS group leader at Phenomenex, who has prior experience at Quest Diagnostics and several mass spectrometry companies; Jenny Moshin, senior field application specialist for AB SCIEX; Brett Holmquist, Ph.D., associate director of the Labcorp’s Endocrine Sciences Laboratory (Esoterix Division); and David Truong, scientist within the PhenoLogix applications group at Phenomenex.

The workshop is partially underwritten by the Southern California Section of AACC, reducing the registration fee to $249 for members. “Supporting educational activities for our members is very important to us and we want to make sure that the cost of the course is not a barrier for anyone that wants to attend,” says Eswari Gudipati, chair of the Southern California AACC Section.

The workshop will be held at Phenomenex headquarters in Torrance, CA. Participants may register online at: www.regonline.com/AACCmay.
