Due to biological factors such as unstable plaque, patients with symptomatic carotid artery disease are largely inappropriate candidates for stenting, but with improved risk factor modification strategies and better embolic protection devices, this picture may change, according to a study published online July 20, 2010, ahead of print in the Journal of Vascular Surgery.
