The U.S. Agriculture Department’s process for approving permits to grow biopharmaceutical crops is “shrouded in secrecy,” making it difficult to know if the crops pose a risk to humans or the environment, a study said on Wednesday. The activist group Center for Science in the Public Interest, CPSI, said the USDA’s failure to disclose more details, such as the drug or chemical being produced, could lead to problems.
