Obese Monkeys Lose Weight as Treatment Targets Blood Vessels in Fat, Reveals Study Published in Science Translational Medicine

Obese rhesus monkeys lost an average of 11 percent of their body weight on an experimental drug that cut off the blood supply to fat tissue, raising the possibility the treatment may work in humans, researchers said. The medicine, dubbed Adipotide by developer Ablaris Therapeutics Inc., also enabled the monkeys to use about 50 percent less insulin to keep blood sugar levels down and prevent damage to internal organs. The study was published in the journal Science Translational Medicine today.
