A new biotechnology institute in College Station is expected to make medical breakthroughs and bring thousands of jobs to Texas.Gov. Rick Perry announced today [July 16, 2005] that a 50 million dollar grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund will fund the new Texas Institute for Genomic Medicine.The facility will conduct research in gene knockout technology, which allows scientists to study functions of individual genes and develop drugs to treat diseases.Thirty-five (m) million dollars of the grant will be used to make two copies of a knockout mouse embryonic stem cell library.The money for the grant comes from the 295 million dollar Texas Enterprise Fund, which was created by the Legislature to lure jobs to Texas.
