Minimally-Invasive Cancer Therapies Revealed at World Congress on Interventional Oncology

WASHINGTON (9 May 2012)—International experts from all oncologic disciplines will gather and advance the future of cancer treatment by exploring the synergy of minimally invasive strategies in both traditional and new oncologic therapies at the World Conference on Interventional Oncology (WCIO), 14-17 June 2012, at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

“WCIO 2012 provides a forum for cross-disciplinary collaboration and education, and is designed for physicians and care-givers from all medical fields involved in the care of the cancer patient,” said Riad Salem, MD, WCIO 2012 Program Chair, and Professor of Radiology, Medicine and Surgery, Director of Interventional Oncology at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

New science scheduled for presentation at the conference includes:

- Randomized evidence on the use of drug-eluting microspheres in colorectal cancer

- Long-term outcomes of thermal ablation for metastatic tumors in the lung

- Improvements in long-term survival of hepatocellular carcinoma

- Comparative effectiveness of open and percutaneous ablation in RCC

- Automated segmentation of tumors

- Early outcomes of irreversible electroporation

- Radioembolization in cholangiocarcinoma, neuroendocrine and other neoplasia

- Transarterial immunotherapy in HCC

- Nanotechnology

- Drug-eluting outcomes with new 70-150 micron particles

WCIO 2012 leverages a combination of a world-class faculty with state-of-the-art lectures, panel discussions, invited papers, and selected abstracts of basic, translational, and clinical research to promote meaningful dialogue on available and emerging therapies in Radiology, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Interventional Oncology, Hepatology, Basic Science Research, and Radiation Oncology. This year also features live cases on t umor ablation, embolization, guidance and targeting where participants can view surgery procedures in real time.

About WCIO

The World Conference on Interventional Oncology is a scientific forum designed to establish, nurture and support Interventional Oncology (IO) as the 4th pillar of cancer therapy alongside medical, surgical and radiation oncology worldwide. IO therapies, such as embolization and tumor ablation, combine the expertise of oncology and radiology and use imaging technology to diagnose and treat localized cancers in ways that are precisely targeted and minimally or non-invasive.
