LIVINGSTON, N.J., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Milestone Scientific Inc. , which develops, manufactures and markets computer controlled local anesthetic delivery systems, today announced that a favorable article on the potential use of Milestone’s CompuFlo device for the administration of epidural anesthesia was published in the October issue of Anesthesiology News, the independent monthly newspaper for anesthesiologists. The article provides further validation of the potential efficacy of the use of CompuFlo for Epidural Blocks, injections that are regularly administered for a variety of medical procedures including childbirth, back pain management and surgery to the lower extremities.
The Anesthesiology News article reports on a presentation by Oscar Ghelber, MD, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston, to the 2005 Annual Meeting of the International Anesthesia Research Society. Dr. Ghelber noted that existing epidural techniques use subjective feedback to identify the epidural space, while the CompuFlo technology provides precise and objective feedback and also allows anesthesiologists to use both hands to advance and direct the needle, thereby making it easier to perform this task. Dr. Ghelber further advised the meeting that the CompuFlo accurately identified the epidural space in 100% of the cases tested in his pilot study. Dr. Ghelber opined that an objective identification of the epidural space “could potentially decrease the incidence of complications, increase the success rate of the procedure and enhance patient safety.”
