GAITHERSBURG, Md., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MedImmune, Inc. announced today that Herren Wu, Ph.D., senior director and head of antibody discovery and protein engineering, received the Senior Technology Fellow Emerald Honors award from Science Spectrum magazine at the 2006 Annual Minorities in Research Science (MIRS) Awards Conference that took place September 14-16, 2006 in Baltimore, Maryland.
The MIRS conference examines and celebrates the outstanding achievements of men and women from multicultural communities who are working in science. The Senior Technology Fellow award recognizes a professional working in research and development who translates basic science discoveries into inventions. A pioneer of innovative antibody discovery and engineering technologies, Dr. Wu leads MedImmune’s drug discovery efforts in the development of several pipeline products in the oncology, inflammatory disease and infectious disease arenas. Dr. Wu is credited with building a multi- disciplinary department that plays a vital role within the organization.

Dr. Wu, named as co-inventor on five patents and nearly 20 patent applications, joined MedImmune in January 2002. Prior to joining MedImmune, he served as associate director, head, molecular biology at Tanox, Inc. from 2000 to 2002. Before joining Tanox, he held a variety of increasingly responsible research positions, culminating as associate director of antibody engineering and discovery, at Applied Molecular Evolution, a subsidiary of Eli Lilly & Co, between 1995 and 2000. Dr. Wu received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the National Taiwan University and his doctorate in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He completed his postdoctoral training at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California.
