McKesson Corporation Opens Shared Service Center in Wales, UK, Creating 300 Jobs

Operation to Serve UK’s National Health Service, World’s Largest Integrated System of Its Kind

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--McKesson Corp., the world’s leading healthcare services provider, is opening a shared service center in Bangor, Wales, UK to support integrated payroll and human resources for the UK National Health Service (NHS), the world’s largest healthcare operation.

A consortium led by McKesson, which includes Oracle Corp. and IBM, will supply NHS with the system, called Electronic Staff Record (ESR), a $480 million contract that will create 300 jobs over the next three years. The Bangor location will be the company’s largest center in the UK outside its Warwick headquarters.

“McKesson UK is a leading healthcare IT solutions and services company and has an excellent track record in providing training and career opportunities for its staff,” said Geraint Jones, chief executive of International Business Wales, the economic development arm of the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG).

“The new Bangor facility will create excellent job opportunities and has been actively supported by WAG,” Mr. Jones added. “Other locations bid for this project and it is a tribute to the talented workforce available in Wales, their record of loyalty to their employers and the quality of life in the country that McKesson chose Bangor.”

Charmaine McDonald, Managing Director of McKesson UK, said: “I am excited at the prospect of developing our Shared Services facility in Wales. Like the NHS, McKesson’s greatest asset is its people and the thought that we can add more talented people to our team in Bangor is incredibly encouraging. I consider this business unit a core element of our future success in the UK.”

Ieuan Wyn Jones, WAG Minister for the Economy and Transport, described McKesson’s decision to locate its center in Bangor as an extremely important investment for the region.

“I am delighted that a world renowned company like McKesson is investing in Wales and opening a major operation center in Bangor. It is excellent news for Wales and North Wales in particular, as such a large number of jobs will provide a very significant boost for the local economy”, said Minister Jones.

The ESR system was designed to transform the way the NHS delivers both HR and payroll services to its employees. The system will create cost efficiencies and service improvement and enable the NHS to have a clear view of its workforce, identify any skills shortages or gaps and provide payroll information, appraisal and training provision. The pay structures, HR processes, government directives and ever changing agendas made it one of the most complex, single IT implementations on record.
