NEW MARTINSVILLE - Bayer MaterialSciences said Wednesday it plans to close part of its New Martinsville plant next summer and lay off about 230 workers. Bayer is closing a methylene diphenyl isocyanate facility at the plant because it can’t compete with lower-cost Gulf Coast operations that make similar materials, plant manager Jim Covington said. Methylene diphenyl isocyanate is used in the production of plastic. Bayer plans to close the plant June 30.
