This week marked one year since Central Ohio Urology Group (COUG) became the first in Columbus to offer the advanced MOSES Pulse 120H holmium laser by Lumenis, which enables them to provide minimally invasive surgeries for kidney stone removal and enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH
“The MOSES Pulse 120H holmium laser technology represents a technological revolution in how we treat stone disease for our patients, with greater safety, efficacy and speed,” said COUG urologist Dr. Adam C. Weiser. “For example, I can now treat large kidney stones on an outpatient basis with MOSES and flexible ureteroscopy – cases that would have required more invasive surgery with an inpatient hospital stay in the past.”
Dr. Rashmi I. Patel, who has performed many stone procedures with the MOSES Pulse 120H in the past year, added, “The MOSES technology offers the most efficient and precise fragmentation and dusting of any ureteral stones and most renal stones. It has just the right balance of power and control for fast, safe stone fragmentation.”
COUG CEO Mark Cherney recalled that as the group searched for a holmium laser, they evaluated the MOSES Pulse 120H against their mission to provide safe, effective, compassionate, thoughtful, and cost-effective care. The revolutionary MOSES Pulse 120H checked all the boxes.
“It has been rewarding this year to see exceptional clinical outcomes with the MOSES Pulse 120H for stone surgery. This advance in medical technology has allowed us to perform less invasive surgeries, with shorter time in the hospital, less anesthesia use, and easier postoperative recovery,” Cherney said. “In addition to stone surgery, we are very excited to announce that COUG surgeons will soon be using the MOSES Pulse 120H to treat BPH in a procedure called holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), considered the new gold standard treatment for BPH.”
COUG is proud to have been one of the first in the Columbus market to introduce this innovative clinical approach in 2019. HoLEP is very safe and effective for all prostate sizes, with less postoperative pain than some alternatives. With BPH affecting more than half of men over age 60,1 it is likely that many people in the community will benefit from this state-of-the-art approach provided as part of COUG’s ongoing commitment to advanced, compassionate patient care.
