Psoriasis is the most prevalent autoimmune disorder in the United States, affecting 7 million Americans. The disease causes skin cells to grow more rapidly than they shed, presenting itself on the skin or scalp in patches of raised, red skin which are painful and itchy. Psoriasis can have a devastating effect on the quality of life of patients who also have an increased risk of many other health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes. In addition, many suffer from emotional and social side effects.
"In my daily work, I see many psoriasis patients who are frustrated with their treatment options, and have lost hope in ever getting 'clear' of their condition," said Linda Hornbeek, Senior Nurse Educator, LMD. "I want to communicate to them that there is reason for optimism. Hopefully one day there will be a cure but until then, treatment methods are improving dramatically."
Nurse Linda is the face and voice behind the blog. She is passionate about the patients she treats and with 17 years' experience as a dermatology nurse, she seeks to provide both information and support to her readers. She welcomes consumer dialog, questions and topic ideas.
