DETROIT, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) will announce the results of an important dietary study of the National Institutes of Health Women’s Health Initiative in the February 7 issue. Embargoed press releases from JAMA and NIH were issued today. Dr. Susan Hendrix, Wayne State University professor of obstetrics and gynecology, is one of the principal investigators and co-author of the study.
According to Dr. Hendrix, the study reveals important findings about the effects of a reduction in the level of total fat intake in the diet on the incidence of breast cancer, heart disease or stroke among healthy postmenopausal women.
Wayne State University School of Medicine and Hutzel Women’s Hospital in the Detroit Medical Center is one of the principal sites of the Women’s Health Initiative, which over the past 15 years has been investigating causes and prevention of major diseases affecting the health of older women. The study announced major findings regarding hormone therapy in 2002 and will announce a third major study regarding the effects of calcium and vitamin D supplementation later this month.
