Shelly Goel to be Named a 2018 Davidson Fellow

Irving, Texas – The Davidson Institute for Talent Development has announced the 2018 Davidson Fellows. Among the honorees is 18-year-old Shelly Goel of Irving. Goel won a $10,000Davidson Fellows Scholarship for her project, An Electronic Device with an Integrated App for Early Detection of Cardiovascular Diseases. She is one of only 20 students across the country to receive this honor.

“It is an incredible milestone to be named a Davidson Fellow,” said Goel. “It both validates my hard work and will support my continued pursuits in college and my future.”

Cardiovascular and arterial diseases are leading causes of death and are responsible for more than a fourth of all U.S. deaths. Goel’s research led her to develop a low-cost, easy-to-use, non-invasive electronic device designed to obtain a continuous blood pressure waveform at the brachial artery. It is integrated with a user-friendly “Blood Pressure Analytics” smartphone application for real-time, multi-parametric analysis and comprehensive assessment of the cardiovascular condition. Minimal training and expertise is required to operate the device and the app allows for its integration in any environment including the home-setting, thus creating a major global impact.

At school, Goel has served asPresident of the National Honor Society and founded her school’s science fair club, where she took the initiative to lead programs that introduce STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) to students in her district.Aside from her scientific interests, Goel practices calligraphy and painting as self-expression.

Goel plans to major in either computer science or computer engineering in order to obtain in-depth knowledge of both software and hardware.

“We are thrilled to recognize the 2018 Davidson Fellows not only for their incredible projects, but also for the journey they forged to reach this point,” said Bob Davidson, founder of the Davidson Institute. “Every year I am amazed by the depth of the Fellows’ accomplishments. Through encouragement and recognition, the Davidson Institute for Talent Development anticipates that gifted students like these will be among the pioneers who will solve the world’s most vexing problems.”

The 2018 Davidson Fellows will be honored at a reception in Washington, D.C., on Friday, September 28.
