Howard Hughes Medical Institute Selects Jones Lang LaSalle as Strategic Facilities Management Partner for Its Janelia Farm Research Campus

CHICAGO, February 28, 2011 — Jones Lang LaSalle announced today that the Howard Hughes Medical Institute has selected the firm to provide integrated facility management services at its Janelia Farm Research Campus located in Loudoun County, Virginia, approximately eight miles north of Dulles International Airport. Opened in 2006, the Rafael Viñoly-designed, 689-acre campus on the banks of the Potomac River is considered one of the most innovative research facilities in the nation.

The wooded campus overlooks the Potomac River and supports more than 300 research and administrative professionals. On-site services include childcare, dining, a fitness center, relocation services, commuter shuttles, local county transportation and access to Zipcars. Additionally, the campus includes a Normandy-style manor house and an adjacent carriage house that are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A slide show of the campus photographed from multiple perspectives is available on the Janelia Farm website.

Janelia Farm is a pioneering research center where scientists from different disciplines gather to collaborate on some of science’s most challenging problems. Janelia Farm also hosts a program of specialized scientific conferences at the campus that are intended to encourage rapid advances and scientific collaborations, particularly related to neuronal networking and imaging.

“The top priority of the facilities operations team is to enable and support the science. We see Jones Lang LaSalle as being the most effective partner to help us accomplish that for Janelia,” said Joanne Theurich, Chief Administrative Officer at Janelia Farm.

Integrated Facility Management that Supports Research

Jones Lang LaSalle’s integrated facility management services are designed to maximize the operating effectiveness of the campus as a whole, which includes more than one million square feet of laboratories, offices, resident and visitor housing, a guest house and conference facilities. The focal point of the Janelia Farm campus is known as the “landscape building” because it is built into the hillside and features a 180,000-square-foot green roof -- one of the largest green roofs in the United States. The ground floor has meeting, food service, administrative, service, and vibration- and height-sensitive support spaces. The two upper floors are devoted to research space.

“The Janelia Farm Research Campus was built to engage and inspire both resident and visiting- biomedical researchers,” said Bill Barrett, Executive Managing Director and Leader of the Life Sciences business at Jones Lang LaSalle. “Our advanced Life Sciences platform will make a significant contribution to this goal by providing specialized expertise, processes and systems all customized to support Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s open and collaborative culture.” Jones Lang LaSalle has a team of real estate and facility management experts dedicated to helping Life Sciences companies optimize and manage their real estate portfolios.
