Kinetic Concepts Inc. emerged as the granddaddy of medical device companies based in San Antonio, but it almost never happened.
Back in the spring of 1979 when Kinetic Concepts — or KCI — was a fledgling specialized medical bed maker, it came perilously close to filing for bankruptcy and shutting down. The money-losing enterprise was mired in $750,000 in debt, hounded by creditors and about to be locked out of its offices by its landlord.
