According to a letter published in JAMA by researchers from the CDC, rates of HIV diagnosis in the U.S. declined from 2002-2011. This result is the conclusion of data examined from the National HIV Surveillance System at the CDC. HIV is the virus responsible for causing AIDS, which weakens and ravages the immune system. The WHO estimates that there are about 35 million people worldwide with HIV, with about 1.1 million persons in the US living with HIV, although they may not be aware of it.
