Healthcare Data Analytics Boot Camp for Professionals Set for May 31 at Maryland Smith

The Center for Health Information & Decision Systems (CHIDS), an academic research center of excellence at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, will host a one-day, Healthcare Data Analytics Boot Camp, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2019 in Van Munching Hall on UMD’s College Park campus.

COLLEGE PARK, Md., May 13, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The Center for Health Information & Decision Systems (CHIDS), an academic research center of excellence at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, will host a one-day, Healthcare Data Analytics Boot Camp, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2019 in Van Munching Hall on UMD’s College Park campus.

The session will be CHIDS’ second such offering. In April, professionals from healthcare organizations across the Baltimore-Washington corridor engaged in training to apply modern machine learning, visualizations and advanced analytics using “R,” a free, powerful open-source programming language.

The demand for such training is reflected in a recent survey by Black Book Research, through which 93 percent of hospital and physician financial executives said they are actively seeking ways to link care with analytics and outcomes to support the consumerism of healthcare and shift to value-based payments through vendor solutions.

Topics in the upcoming CHIDS Healthcare Data Analytics Boot Camp will include “Getting up and running with R,” which involves working with directories, reading in data, installing packages, creating simple visualizations, and guidelines for cleaning, exploring and segmenting data. Techniques for prediction, classification and clustering of data also will be covered.

“By the end of this eight-hour session, participants will be able to take raw data, import it into R, and conduct analysis to bolster their reporting and decision-making with a variety of advanced analytical techniques,” says CHIDS Deputy Director Kenyon Crowley, who will provide training alongside lead instructor Courtney Paulson, assistant professor in Maryland Smith’s Department of Decision, Operations and Information Technologies.

“The session will be most helpful if you’re comfortable working with data and you’re ready to take your skills to the next level,” Crowley says.
