Haemonetics Corporation Release: Mark Popovsky, M.D., Awarded For Contributions To Blood Banking

BRAINTREE, Mass., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Haemonetics Corporation is pleased to announce that Mark Popovsky, M.D., is the 2005 recipient of the Elmer DeGowan Lectureship of the University of Iowa. The title of Dr. Popovsky’s lecture at the event held on November 2, 2005 was Transfusion and Lung Injury: 2005 and Beyond. The lectureship and award recognizes Dr. Popovsky for his significant contributions to medicine and blood banking.

Dr. Popovsky has almost 25 years experience in blood banking, transfusion medicine and management. He is currently Vice President and Corporate Medical Director at Haemonetics Corporation. Formerly, he was Chief Medical Officer and then CEO of American Red Cross, New England Region as well as Director of the Mayo Clinic Transfusion & Intravenous Services.

Dr. Popovsky is currently Associate Clinical Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Pathology at Boston University School of Medicine. He is on the editorial boards of Transfusion, Transfusion Medicine Reviews, Immunohematology and American Journal of Clinical Pathology; and he has served repeatedly throughout his professional career on study and policy committees of the American Association of Blood Banks, World Health Organization, American Red Cross, and International Society of Blood Transfusion. He has published extensively in transfusion medicine literature.

Dr. Popovsky is a graduate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine and is Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, and blood banking.
