Efficacy Of Blood Pressure Drug Questioned

A leading drug used by millions of people to lower blood pressure does not prevent deaths from heart attacks or other cardiovascular problems as well as other treatments, researchers said on Friday. Atenolol, which is sold under the brand name Tenormin by drugs giant AstraZeneca, was first introduced in 1976. It has been off patent for many years and most sales now consist of generics rather than the AstraZeneca brand. Swedish scientists questioned its benefits after reviewing the results of nine previous studies of the drug.
