Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Completes Deployment of MedAptus’ Infusion Services Module Solution Yields Streamlined, Compliant Coding of Nearly 90,000 Annual Infusion Visits

BOSTON, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- MedAptus(R), the leading provider of point-of-care charge capture technologies, today announced that its customer, the prestigious Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, has completed enterprise-wide deployment of the company’s Infusion Services Module.

The Module, an extension of MedAptus’ revenue-enhancing Facility Charge Capture solution, supports the compliant capture of infusion services and related charges. The application also includes powerful administrative tools that provide real-time revenue cycle visibility as well as exception-based charge management and reconciliation.

Boston-based Dana-Farber is a principal teaching affiliate of the Harvard Medical School and is among the leading cancer research and care centers in the United States. The organization first implemented MedAptus’ Professional Charge Capture solution, via Physician Workstation, in July of 2006. Within five months, approximately 300 physicians and midlevel providers were using the desktop-based version of the software to enter more than 3,000 outpatient charges on a weekly basis.

Given the success of Dana-Farber’s Physician Workstation implementation for professional charges, the organization sought similar automation to streamline coding for facility charges related to infusion visits. An additional desire was for functionality that would automatically translate what nurses enter for infusion services delivered into compliant codes based on the organizational charge data master. Working collaboratively, MedAptus and Dana-Farber personnel developed the Infusion Services Module as an add-on to Facility Charge Capture, enabling the nurses to focus on patient care and not on the constantly changing regulations governing infusion billing.

“Until we implemented the Infusion Services Module, our nurses relied on paper encounter forms to capture infusion charges. Not only were the visits themselves complex, requiring multiple therapies and involving multiple nurses, but the overhead to redesign encounter forms, retrain nurses and monitor compliance resulting from annual regulatory changes was extremely high. Now that we have technology in place to support the charge capture process and automate updates related to annual changes, our nurses are able to focus more on the care of the patient and less on administrative demands,” said Lori Buswell, RN, MS, CS, OCN, director, nursing patient care services/clinical operations and decision support, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She further added that throughout the phased in roll-out, during the first week of usage, more than 95 percent of captured charges were ready for export by the following morning, greatly reducing charge lag.

The Infusion Services Module was fully deployed to Dana-Farber’s 120 infusion nurses across its Boston locations in less than 90 days. Completion of this deployment means that MedAptus technology is now used for point-of- care charge capture related to Dana-Farber’s nearly 200,000 annual outpatient visits, roughly 90,000 of which include infusions.

“We are honored to have worked so closely with Dana-Farber on a solution that effectively eliminates the regulatory headaches that have increasingly burdened clinical staff involved in the delivery of infusion services. And of tremendous organizational benefit are the revenue capture rules which provide real-time feedback at the point-of-care to ensure accurate and complete capture of services, medications and supplies,” said David Delaney, MD, chief medical officer of MedAptus. “Dana-Farber was an excellent development partner, providing tremendous input around our Infusion product’s functionality. We applaud their keen insights and their ability to rapidly - and successfully - implement new technologies.”
