Fairfax Media has reported the Government’s scientific organisation bought cheap chemicals in China. It says in 2011, the chemicals were sold to Novartis as an anti-counterfeiting technology to protect medicines from being cloned by criminals making fake pharmaceuticals. The chemicals were reportedly marketed to Novartis by DataTrace DNA, which was a joint venture between CSIRO and another company, Datadot Technology. CSIRO’s chief Mike Whelan has told a Senate Estimates committee the organisation is still investigating the matter but has come to a number of preliminary conclusions. “There is no evidence that CSIRO deceived or wilfully misled DataTrace or Novartis as to the supply of material,” he said.
