Coronado Biosciences is betting that a drug made from the tiny eggs of a worm found inside the intestines of a pig - which two months ago failed in a trial in patients with Crohn’s disease - might be effective as a treatment for autism. Last week, the Burlington biotech announced interim results from a small study of the drug, known as trichuris suis ova, or TSO, which were presented at the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology Annual Meeting in Florida. The placebo-controlled study involves 10 high-functioning adults with autism with a history of allergies, or else a family history of immune-inflammatory illness.
