Controversial Metal-On-Metal Hip Implants Were “State Of The Art”, Manufacturer DePuy, Inc. Claims

A metal-on-metal hip implant which allegedly left thousands of patients with horrific long-term medical complications was in fact “state of the art” and “the best scientific solution available”, the companies who built and distributed the device have claimed. Medical giants DePuy and Johnson & Johnson are being sued in the Federal Court by nearly 2000 recipients of ASR hip implants in the largest medical implant class action in Australian history. The patients say that the implant’s flawed design resulted in rapid degradation, releasing metal ions into the blood and tissue surrounding their hips, and that the manufacturer knew about this for years before issuing a recall.
