SOMERSET, NJ, January 5, 2011— Catalent Pharma Solutions announces the installation of electronic verification applications at its Clinical Supply Services facilities in Philadelphia, PA and Schorndorf, Germany. The addition of these automated process check stations is part of an ongoing investment to reduce customer costs and proactively increase service quality standards to better meet clinical trial needs globally.
The automated scan and assemble system in Catalent’s Philadelphia facility improves quality and efficiency by eliminating randomized schedules and manual employee checks on the labels of each patient kit. This system also allows for a more streamlined process to release batch records and eliminates the need to review endless sheets of tables to confirm that each kit was assembled and documented properly. The system is fully integrated which prevents the scanning process from continuing if an employee scans an incorrect item to be assembled into the assigned patient kit; and generates reports on the number of finished kits assembled and exception documents for each order. This system was designed and validated to support large, global phase III clinical trials and is being deployed in all Catalent packaging sites.
Catalent’s Schorndorf, Germany facility utilizes a label check station (LCS) which verifies labels on a backing tape for errors and discharges defective labels. Due to adjustable failure sensibility, errors can be excluded before the actual labeling process, and only complete and correct labels are applied on the final product. All printed details of the label are examined in the LCS; in particular the variable data (optical character verification/optical character recognition) and the label code (Pharmacode, Barcode or Datamatrix®) are verified, which allows for increased quality assurance. The benefits for Catalent customers include increased productivity and accuracy on assembled clinical supplies.
“Our continued global investments in the latest technology upgrades in clinical packaging, like the purchase of a ZED in-line blister card sealer earlier this year, use of automated scan and assemble systems and label check stations, illustrates our commitment to our customers’ needs for new strategies to streamline supply chain management. It is important to Catalent to support high standards in quality, accuracy and reduced timelines to help our clinical trials customers worldwide,” said Frank Lis, Vice President and General Manager, Clinical Supply Services, Catalent.
