| RALEIGH, N.C., /PRNewswire/ -- Pamela Houston, a BSA LifeStructures architect and healthcare planner, has earned her Evidence-Based Design Accreditation and Certification (EDAC) from The Center for Health Design. With this achievement, Houston joins an elite group of healthcare design professionals and becomes the eighth BSA employee to earn EDAC certification. Evidence-Based Design (EBD) uses credible research to drive healthcare facility planning and design decisions to achieve the best patient, staff and operational outcomes. Numerous studies have shown that the physical environment affects patient stress, patient and staff safety, staff effectiveness and the quality of care provided in hospitals and other healthcare settings. “We believe that design has the power to positively influence healing,” Tim Spence, BSA’s National Healing expert stated. “The EDAC certification provides the skills and tools to create healing environments informed by research and metrics.” Houston’s expertise in Evidence-Based Design enables her to help set goals at the beginning of a project that will inform decisions throughout design and construction. She uses EBD to inform planning decisions specific to each project and to create outcomes that can be verified in Post-Occupancy Evaluations. Having worked more than 16 years in the healthcare industry, she has experience in design, planning, project management and state-level regulating. Her recent work includes a multi-phased renovation of New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit and the WakeMed Cary vertical expansion, which includes 40 new inpatient beds.
