BIOTRONIK Launches New Online Travel Guide, Giving Heart Patients Peace of Mind While Traveling

BERLIN, Germany, September 27, 2012 — BIOTRONIK, a leading manufacturer of innovative medical technology, has launched its new online Travel Guide. With just a few clicks, patients with implanted BIOTRONIK cardiac devices such as pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) or heart failure therapy devices can access information about recommended hospitals and medical centers in more than 100 countries around the globe.

Many patients do not realize that device checkups can be performed in almost any part of the world—and not just by the cardiologist they normally see while at home. BIOTRONIK’s new Travel Guide helps patients to be fully prepared when they travel, knowing that if they should encounter an unexpected situation related to their device, they can quickly and easily locate an expert who can offer them qualified medical care and support.

Patients, whether at home or traveling, are instructed to always carry the implantable cardiac device identification card that they received at the time of implantation. The card identifies the patient as the recipient of a cardiac device and lists important information about the device and the patient’s medical condition.

“We aim to deliver the highest possible peace of mind and quality of life to our patients,” explains Christoph Böhmer, President International, BIOTRONIK. “To do this we manufacture implants that meet the highest quality and reliability standards. And with BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring®, we offer our patients continuous remote monitoring. Each patient’s doctor receives daily updates about the patient’s medical and device status, which allows him or her to contact the patient for therapy adjustment, if necessary.”

“With our new Travel Guide, we’re looking to enhance our patients’ quality of life even further, offering information that allows for fast, easy-to-access medical care”, continued Böhmer.

The Travel Guide can be found in the patient section of the BIOTRONIK website. To find a device follow-up clinic for BIOTRONIK implants, the patient simply needs to select the desired country from the drop-down menu, types in a city, and the tool will give the patient information about the closest clinic and how to reach it.

The Travel Guide is currently available in English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish and the list of clinics is continuously updated and expanded.
