11 July 2013 -- Accessing the UK’s world leading clinical research infrastructure can enable bioscience companies and their investors to accelerate clinical development and reduce cash burn. That is the message in a new guide for the bioscience industry published today by the BioIndustry Association (BIA) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure (NOCRI).

The guide, “Navigating England’s clinical research infrastructure: How NOCRI helps simplify access to accelerate discoveries” is being launched to senior UK bioscience executives at the BIA’s CEO and Investor Forum.

Setting-up a clinical study includes steps that can be time consuming if not managed efficiently and NOCRI provides a single point of contact offering a bespoke service to clinical research sponsors. This helps companies navigate the available infrastructure, access expertise and make effective use of facilities. NIHR is investing £800 million over five years in such world leading facilities having received a funding boost from the government in 2011.

Steve Bates, Chief Executive of the BIA, said:

“For bioscience companies, accessing the right expertise and the right facilities at the right time is vitally important. Every day saved during clinical development helps companies reduce cash burn and NOCRI helps streamline the process and avoid unnecessary delays.

“NOCRI acts as a ‘research SatNav’, directing companies to the most appropriate resource whilst maintaining quality. Our guide is designed to introduce UK life science companies to the opportunities available and also show, through some case studies, how their peers have already benefited from the service with a direct impact on their bottom line.”

Mark Samuels, Managing Director, NOCRI, said:

“NOCRI is committed to supporting biotechnology companies in their bid to connect with the NIHR - the most integrated health research system in the world. Through our continued close collaboration with partners such as the BIA, NOCRI is strengthening collaborations between industry and the NIHR. Streamlined access to the NIHR’s technologically-advanced R&D facilities and skilled clinical research workforce is already helping companies to develop new treatments.”
