HOUSTON, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Williams Bailey Law Firm, L.L.P., announced today a $500,000 jury verdict delivered in Philadelphia on behalf of three women who suffered heart-valve damage as a result of taking the diet drug "fen-phen." The women, all residents of Utah, will apply the award to future medical treatments for the drug's on-going side effects.
In 1997, the Food and Drug Administration announced the withdrawal of fen- phen, named for a combination of the drugs fenfluramine and an appetite suppressant called phentermine. Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, of Madison, New Jersey, manufactured the drugs fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine under the names Pondimin and Redux. The combination of Pondimin and Redux with phentermine resulted in serious health problems.
"This jury verdict vindicates these women who have been suffering -- and will continue to suffer for years to come -- because of fen-phen," said Steven J. Kherkher, a partner at Williams Bailey, who represented the plaintiffs. "We're going to keep bringing to trial these types of cases until the thousands of fen-phen victims are compensated by Wyeth."
Williams Bailey is part of a consortium of law firms that is representing over 6,000 victims of fen-phen. Trials have been underway since July and are scheduled well into 2005 in various jurisdictions across the U.S.
