Ultra-Scan Corporation Release: Ultra-Scan(TM) Ultrasonic Biometric Readers Pass Military, UL, FCC And European Testing Standards

AMHERST, N.Y., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Ultra-Scan Corporation today announced it has received declarations that the Company’s patented UltraTouch ultrasonic biometric fingerprint reader has passed a number of extensive product safety and reliability tests in compliance with Department of Defense, Federal Communications Commission, Underwriters Laboratories, and European testing standards.

“For any identity management application to be secure and convenient, the underlying technology must be successfully transitioned into a reliable product. For the application to ultimately succeed, the product has to deploy successfully in harsh, high security, high use environments for many consecutive years with no preventive maintenance required,” said Dr. John Schneider, president of Ultra-Scan Corporation.

“Whether the application is for a desert border crossing, a transportation port in sub-freezing climates, a hospital operating room, or even in an ATM or supermarket checkout lane, there is no margin for failure. Solving a reliability problem in the laboratory costs one-tenth of what it takes to solve in the field. Many biometric vendors have only focused on the cost of goods as opposed to the cost of ownership for the end user,” Schneider said.

“Alone in the biometrics world, and unique in its use of sound waves for imaging the finger, Ultra-Scan’s Livescan Ultrasonic Identification System, (LUIS(TM)) technology works, scales, and lasts without any degradation or loss of performance.”

The Company’s UltraTouch readers have passed extensive product reliability testing as defined in MIL-STD 810, Random Vibration Category 12-Jet Aircraft, table 514.5c-VIII, which simulates the vibration of a jet plane during take- off and landing. The readers were subjected to random vibration, 15 to 2000 hertz, with a force of four G’s RMS along three different axes while cycling temperature between -40 degrees F to 140 degrees F, for a period of four hours. Additional testing included product drop tests from a height of 3-1/2 feet, life cycle testing simulating a five year usage, impact testing by dropping a one pound steel ball from a height of four feet onto the reader, and transport/shipping testing simulating the low pressure experienced at an altitude of 15,000 feet.

UltraTouch readers have also passed electromagnetic compliance testing for both susceptibility and radiation as defined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Class A and Class B standards, Part 15, Subpart B, for North America, as well as CE Mark certification for the European market. In addition, the UltraTouch reader has been certified for all requisite safety compliance testing as defined in UL1950 for use in the United States and Canada.

Ultra-Scan’s patented UltraTouch ultrasonic fingerprint readers are widely recognized as the most accurate method for finger image based identity management programs and services. Ultra-Scan’s UltraTouch readers use high frequency sound waves to “see through” common contaminants such as dirt, grease, newsprint, hand creams, cigarette smoke and others, that can be present on the fingers, or built up over time on the fingerprint platen surface. The ability of LUIS to image through these contaminants guarantees unsurpassed accuracy, reliability and ease of use for people using touch- accessed programs and eliminates any preventive maintenance issues associated with other scanning technologies.

UltraTouch ultrasonic readers work as peripherals to automated medical devices, access control systems, electronic cash registers, point-of-sale credit card terminals and other networked or stand-alone devices or as OEM components in kiosks, ATMs, gasoline pumps and automated dispensers where high reliability and accuracy are requisite. The Company also offers a complete line of applications for the healthcare industry ranging from secured network log on to a fully integrated Master Patient Index system.
