TORRANCE, Calif., Aug. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Torrance Memorial Medical Center announced today that it will be using advanced, ventilator technology from Covidien to provide a simple, safe and smart way to care for patients.

The acute care ventilator is designed to help patients breathe more naturally, compared to conventional mechanical ventilation, and help clinicians move patients off mechanical ventilation as soon as possible. Patients on mechanical ventilation are often sedated to ease agitation and help them tolerate breath support and other medical interventions. The ventilator features advanced synchrony tools that help clinicians set the ventilator to adapt to their patients’ unique needs and help provide the appropriate level of support throughout the breath.

The leading edge ventilator system is for the smallest patients - neonatal - to adult.

“Patients may require ventilator assistance for various reasons during hospitalization. Our commitment to them is to provide the best professional care and the latest technology,” said Pamela Michael, director of Pulmonary, Sleep and EEG at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. “Being on a ventilator can be a disturbing experience for a patient. Our goal is to limit sedation whenever possible because sedation can be very damaging.”

“We are pleased that Torrance Memorial Medical Center is partnering with us,” said James E. Willett, vice president and general manager, Respiratory Solutions, Covidien. “The Puritan Bennett 980 ventilator provides clinicians with a simple, safe and smart way to care for patients.”
