SunChips And The The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Take Steps To Fight Breast Cancer

PLANO, Texas, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Frito-Lay today announced that SunChips, the company’s line of multigrain snacks, will be the official sponsor of the Komen Race for the Cure(R) Series National Volunteer Recognition Program. As part of the sponsorship, SunChips will partner with more than 110 local Komen Race for the Cure(R) events to recognize the dedication and contribution of the more than 75,000 volunteers who make these events a success. The partnership also includes the SunChips Crunch for the Cure(TM) national pink ribbon bag promotion. The partnership will begin in January and continue throughout the year.

“For almost 25 years the Komen Foundation has been an educational and inspirational organization touching the lives of many people,” said Lora DeVuono, group vice president, brand marketing and advertising, Frito-Lay North America. “As dedicated volunteers across the country generously give of themselves for this effort, SunChips wants to be there to say ‘thank you’ and recognize the people working hard to support the Komen Foundation and their mission to eradicate breast cancer.”

SunChips, introduced in 1991, provide one full serving of whole grains from a blend of corn, oats and wheat and carry the FDA approved heart health claim “diets rich in whole grain foods and other plant foods, and low in saturated fat and cholesterol may help reduce the risk of heart disease.”

As the exclusive sponsor of the Komen Race for the Cure(R) National Volunteer Recognition Program, SunChips will recognize the thousands of volunteers across the country who dedicate their time to the Race by hosting a “Volunteer Thank You Wall” where event participants and breast cancer survivors can post their personal thank you notes for the Race volunteers. The postings from more than 100 local Komen Race for the Cure(R) events will be collectively posted at the last event in 2006 in San Diego, CA. SunChips will also offer a hospitality area for volunteers at local events.

“Komen volunteers have been the foundation of our work since the very beginning and truly enable us to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer,” said Cindy Schneible, Komen Foundation vice president, Cause Marketing Department. “The Foundation welcomes and thanks SunChips for the commitment they have made to our volunteers and our organization, and we look forward to working together.”

To help inspire more people to volunteer to support this important cause, SunChips will host Komen Race for the Cure(R) volunteer resources at http://www.sunchips.com . The Komen Volunteer area of the brand’s Web site will include valuable volunteer information, breast health information, volunteer photos and testimonials, an online “Volunteer Thank You Wall” and a SunChips Volunteer of the Year award program to recognize the outstanding contributions of volunteers submitted by local Komen Affiliates.

Leading up to National Breast Cancer Awareness month, SunChips will launch the Crunch for the Cure(TM) SunChips pink ribbon bag program. Consumers can submit their proof of purchase from specially marked bags of SunChips online at http://www.sunchips.com and SunChips will donate 25 cents to the Komen Foundation (up to $250,000). The program will be available until December 15, 2006.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. A global leader in the fight against breast cancer, the Foundation fulfills its mission through support of innovative breast cancer research and community outreach programs around the world.

The Komen Race for the Cure(R) Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. These events celebrate breast cancer survivorship and honor those who have lost their battle with the disease. The largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, the Komen Race for the Cure(R) Series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants in Dallas, Texas, in 1983 to a series of more than 100 Races with more than one million people expected to participate this year.

SunChips are available in Original, Harvest Cheddar, French Onion and coming soon in Garden Salsa.
