SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwired - July 15, 2014) -

Stratos Product Development today announced it is a recipient of a 2014 R&D 100 Award for work on Intellectual Ventures’ Passive Vaccine Storage Device. Stratos provided design and development services for the device that is currently being used in Africa to deliver life-saving vaccines to thousands of children. The award from R&D Magazine indicates that the vaccination storage device is among the 100 most technologically significant products introduced in the past year.

“Stratos Product Development is honored to receive an R&D 100 Award and to be recognized as a contributor to one of the year’s most important technology innovations,” John Havard, Chief Technical Officer, Stratos Product Development said. “Stratos is committed to applying science and technology to solve some of the world’s most challenging problems, and this collaboration with Intellectual Ventures has been particularly rewarding.”

More than 23 million children do not receive routine immunizations annually and more than 1.5 million children under the age of five die each year from vaccine-preventable diseases, like malaria or tuberculosis. This is partially due to limitations in the temperature-controlled supply chain that is needed to prevent vaccines from spoiling between their point of manufacture and their use.

Designed to keep vaccines at the appropriate temperatures for a month or more on a single batch of ice, the Passive Vaccine Storage Device can store up to 300 doses of vaccines or enough to serve a community of 6,000. It is comprised of a ruggedized vacuum-insulated container, ice blocks and a telemetry module. Vaccines are stored in three “stacks” comprised of interlocking “cups” optimized for the vaccine schedules of specific countries and interchangeable sizes to suit different vaccine configurations.

“With this device, we can provide an enduring presence of cold and potent vaccines to remote sites that are off the power grid. This is where children are the hardest to reach, and represent the most critical priority for eradicating diseases such as polio,” said Maurizio Vecchione, Senior Vice President of Global Good and Research at Intellectual Ventures.

The R&D 100 Awards recognize excellence across a wide range of industries, including telecommunications, optics, high-energy physics, materials science, chemistry and biotechnology. Some winners are established Fortune 500 companies and others are federally funded research institutions, academia and government labs.

The 2014 R&D 100 Awards Banquet and Awards Presentation will take place on November 7, 2014 at The Bellagio in Las Vegas. Click here to view the full list of this year’s winners.
