“With the rising popularity of office-based medical procedures, the presence of an anesthesiologist adds to increased patient safety and comfort,” said Marc E. Koch, MD, MBA, President, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Somnia, Inc. “While our focus is on continuing the growth of our national company, we take pride in giving our clients local attention.” Koch added that patients increasingly appreciate the convenience of a procedure performed in a doctor’s office and should accept nothing less than the gold standard, a board certified anesthesiologist, when undergoing an office-based surgery.

Office-based surgery is one of the fastest growing areas in medicine. Improved technology and short-acting anesthetics have enabled less invasive surgeries to become safer, more common and more conducive to an office setting. According to the Federated Ambulatory Surgery Association (FASA), the overall volume of surgeries has increased dramatically in recent years, growing from 20 million to 40 million cases from 1981 to 1999, and is expected to surpass 50 million cases by 2006.

Begun in 1996 as Resource Anesthesiology Associates by Yale-trained anesthesiologists Marc Koch, MD, and Robert Goldstein, MD, the firm is riding a wave of increased surgeries, especially those being done in outpatient settings like doctors’ offices and ambulatory surgery centers (ASC). Since 1999, the firm’s annual revenue of has grown from, $1.3 to a projected $16.5 million for 2004.
