Enzi, Chairman of the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, will receive the award during a Capitol Hill reception on June 14th. MDMA is recognizing the senator for his steadfast support of small and innovative medical technology innovators, particularly during last year’s negotiations to stabilize the FDA’s device user-fee program.

“As a staunch supporter of small business, Chairman Enzi’s leadership on the HELP Committee has assisted innovative medical technology entrepreneurs in bringing safe and effective technology to patients and caregivers as quickly as possible,” said Mark B. Leahey, Esq., Executive Director of MDMA. “MDMA thanks the Chairman for his hard work and support on the Medical Device User Fee Stabilization Act, which has made a difference for millions of patients and the thousands of small to midsize device manufactures who were burdened by the rapidly increasing fees and unpredictable fee structure.”

Past recipients of the MDMA Chairman’s Award include Rep. Joe Barton (R- TX) and Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Mike DeWine (R-OH) and Herb Kohl (D-WI).

Also during MDMA’s Annual Meeting, Dr. Mark McClellan, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), will address the group, marking the fifth year he has attended. Meeting attendees also will receive a firsthand FDA update from the agency’s Acting Commissioner, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach. Other confirmed speakers include Dr. Dan Schultz, Director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health and Tom Gustafson, Deputy Director of the Center for Medicare Management at CMS.

Expert panels comprised of senior staff from Congress, FDA, CMS, industry and the financial services sector will discuss challenges for medical technology progress. In addition to FDA topics and Medicare reimbursement issues, the meeting will feature sessions on market access, including device contract gainsharing and hospital group purchasing organization reform; federal health care compliance; and effective patent strategies.
