OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- When: 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Picket on Wednesday, Sept. 7 Noon Rally and Press Conference Where: Children’s Hospital Of Oakland (Main Entrance) 747 52nd Street, Corner of Martin Luther King
On Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., over 100 caregivers at Children’s Hospital of Oakland will picket their employer over management’s proposal to freeze wages for most workers in “non-technical” classifications. The workers are members of SEIU United Healthcare Workers- West and have been in negotiations with management for a new contract for several months now. Workers will hold a Noon Rally and press conference.
“In the Bay Area, you can’t pay the rent on zero percent,” says Ward Clerk and Chief Shop Steward Helen Christian. “We’re here for the kids and their families, and we believe in our mission. But we have families too, and the prices of everything, especially gas, just keep going up.”
“The proposal to freeze wages would put Children’s Hospital in a category by itself, at a time when most hospitals throughout Northern California have agreed to significant annual wage increases in the past year,” said SEIU UHW President Sal Rosselli. “Our Union wants to have a very positive relationship with the management of Children’s Hospital of Oakland. We support their social mission, and we want to work with them on their long range goals. But their proposing a wage freeze obviously doesn’t help to foster that kind of relationship.”
SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West, with more than 140,000 members, is the largest and most powerful healthcare union in the Western U.S. We represent every type of healthcare worker, including nursing, professional, technical and service classifications.
