Community PREP was first announced in December 2010. The Project seeks to provide funding to create 30 new community pharmacy residency positions with grants to non-profit academic institutions totaling $50,000 each. Fifteen grants will be available in 2011.
“The NACDS Foundation is pleased to provide this much needed funding to create and expand community pharmacy residency programs throughout the United States,” said NACDS Foundation President Edith A. Rosato, RPh, IOM. “These patient-focused residency programs will help cultivate pharmacy graduates’ abilities to provide innovation in the delivery of patient care services under the expert-guidance of community pharmacy preceptors. Residencies are wonderful partnerships between community pharmacies and schools or colleges of pharmacy, and play a key role in helping to improve the healthcare outcomes of the patients they serve as well as expand educational opportunities for the next generation of pharmacists”.
The NACDS Foundation established a two track system for Community PREP grant applicants. Eligible entities may apply to either the Accelerated or Traditional Track options. Accelerated Track applicants must fill a residency position by July 1, 2011, and submit an application between February 1, 2011 and March 15, 2011, while Traditional Track applicants must fill a residency position by July 1, 2012, and apply between February 1, 2011 and July 1, 2011.
An additional fifteen Community PREP grants will be available through the NACDS Foundation in 2012.
